My middle son loves pugs. He’s generally nervous around dogs, but pugs are the exception. He gets so excited any time we meet a pug in person, and if he sees a pug toy, pug shirt, or anything else featuring these wrinkly pups, he starts counting his allowance money to see if he can buy it.
That means we’ve read just about every pug book our local library has to offer! This list contains our favorites — stories that are as adorable as the dogs who inspired them.

Unlovable by Dan Yaccarino — Other pets make fun of Alfred the Pug’s short legs and his squished face, which makes Alfred quite sure that he’s unlovable. When Alfred meets a dog named Rex, he wants to be friends so badly that he isn’t honest about himself. What will Rex think when he learns the truth? This book is a sweet story about the true meaning of friendship.
Pug by Ethan Long — It’s cold and snowy, but Pug is determined to go on a walk, no matter how bad the weather may be. This fun story is perfect for brand new readers, with short repetitive sentences and simple sight words.
Pugs of the Frozen North (A Not-So-Impossible Tale) by Philip Reeve — Sika and Shen want to win the sled dog race more than anything — the winner gets a magical wish granted! However, they don’t have any sled dogs. All they have are pug puppies. And it takes a LOT of pug puppies to pull a sled! School-aged kids will love this funny chapter book.
Captain Pug: The Dog Who Sailed the Seas by Laura James — Pug would love to stay home and enjoy his jam tart, but his friend Lady Miranda has plans for an adventure on the high seas. Pug Meets Pig by Sue Lowell Gallion — Pug has a happy life — until Pig shows up! Pig eats Pug’s food, sleeps in Pug’s bed, and messes up Pug’s regular routine. Pug doesn’t like the change and doesn’t want to share his favorite things. Can these two adorable creatures ever become friends?
